À la fin de l’automne, Michael Zhan a fait un détour par rapport à ses tournées d’approvisionnement habituelles dans le Yunnan et le Fujian. Il s’est rendu à l’est, à Yixing, non pour des théières, mais pour des compagnons de thé — ces petites figurines d’argile qui vivent sur le plateau à gōng fu. Dans un atelier familial aux abords de la ville de Dingshu, il a trouvé un maître qui travaille exclusivement le minerai de zhū ní de la mine de Xiaomeiyao. Cette argile est notoirement difficile à façonner ; sa forte teneur en fer la fait se rétracter de manière irrégulière à la cuisson, et seule une fraction de chaque fournée survit.

Michael a passé un après‑midi à regarder les pouces du potier donner naissance aux formes de pí xiū — chacune une pièce originale sculptée à la main, non moulée. Il a choisi ce pí xiū particulier pour la ligne tendue de son échine et le port alerte de sa tête, comme s’il était prêt à bondir dans une nouvelle séance de thé. La signature a été imprimée sur le ventre avant la cuisson finale, une pratique que la famille conserve depuis trois générations.

Le rouge zhū ní produit une patine particulièrement vive. Contrairement au zǐ ní, plus poreux, il prend la couleur lentement, récompensant la patience. Michael a rapporté huit pí xiū de ce lot — chacun numéroté, photographié et conservé dans une pochette en lin jusqu’à ce qu’il atteigne un plateau. Il dit que le meilleur moment pour acquérir un compagnon de thé est avant qu’il n’ait une histoire ; le premier thé que vous versez sur lui devient le fondement d’une conversation qui durera une décennie.
