Tea

砖茶 zhuānchá and 茯茶 fúchá brewed with snow and spring water from the Kyzylsu: the leaf is first boiled in a kettle until dark, then milk is poured in and salt added, it is boiled once more, and the kettle is kept at the edge of the hearth all day. The distinguishing feature here is the routine, not the recipe: herders have one solid meal, in the evening, and throughout the daylight hours on the pasture they subsist on 奶茶 nǎichá with 馕 náng, topping up the cup ten times over. Hence the character’s name: a day on tea alone. Eastern slopes of the Pamirs and the Tien Shan.

Crown growth

A set crest of tea foam: a low, dense growth with a wavy edge, in a warm clarified-amber tone with a reddish cast, matte surface — as if the film skimmed off the tea had risen to the crown and hardened; along the lower edge, a dark rim of brew grips the growth at its base.

Headwear

卡尔帕克 kǎ’ěrpàkè — an ak-kalpak of everyday cut made from rolled felt in a warm light-gray tone: the crown is raised HIGH, the walls taper toward a rounded peak, there is no brim at all, a short slit in front with its edges pressed against the crown. Dark braid trims the lower edge and runs along all four wedge seams to the top, dividing the light field into sections — the dark seam trim on a kalpak is documentary. The slot for the growth sits on the front slope, close to the peak.

Outline at 6 mm. A tall wedge. A solid felt wedge with no brim; from the front it reads only as a thin slit line: differs from Yanka in the complete absence of a brim — there a triangle sits on a wide horizontal line, here the wedge sits straight on the skull; from Maonan in that her headwear itself does not rise at all — the wrap is low and smooth, and only the comb of splints of her crown growth stands above the crown, while here the whole mass of the headwear goes up as a single wedge; from Evenki in being twice as tall and having straight rather than splayed walls.

Clothing

A chapan of camel wool cloth, a sash wrapped twice around, short boots, a rolled felt mat behind the back.
